Salt Art Project for kids

10 Apr 2018

Last night my kids made these really fun salt art projects. We discussed how in ancient times, soldiers got paid with salt because it was valuable to adding flavor or for preserving food. The word salary comes from the word, sal or salt. So simple and fun!

Supplies:

  • Cardstock or heavy paper
  • Glue (Elmers or Tacky)
  • Salt
  • Watercolors
  • Cookie sheet or casserole dish

Directions:

  1. Draw with a pencil a simple design on your cardstock.
  2. Outline design with the glue.
  3. While the glue is still wet, place cardstock in a shallow cookie sheet or casserole dish and generously cover glue design with salt. Shake off.
  4. Wet a paintbrush and dip in watercolor of your choice
  5. Softly press the paintbrush onto the salt and watch the color spread. Continue throughout your design.
  6. Allow to dry completely before hanging your design for all to see!
